EARLY YEARS It all began with a letter to the board of directors of Bayer's works, then called the "Paint Factory formerly known as Friedrich Bayer & Co." In February 1903, Wilhelm Hausild, former secretary-general of the Wuppertal Gymnastics Association, and August Kuhlmann, secretary-general of the "Male Factory and Officer," asked for support to establish a work gymnastics club. Toward the turn of the century, there were three informal gymnastics clubs in Vistorf that did not belong to the German Gymnastics Association. Housechild and Koehmann wanted to make gymnastics socially acceptable in Leverkusen because the area around the factory was called and pointed out the advantages of gymnastics.
