Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio S.p.A., generally Atalanta, Atalanta Bergamo, or in short, Atalanta BC is an Italian football club located in Bergamo, Lombardy.
Atalanta has the nicknames Nerazuri and Orovic. They play in blue and black vertical stripe shirts, black pants, and black socks.
The club's home stadium is Atleti Achuri Ditalia with a capacity of 26,638. In Italy, Atalanta is sometimes referred to as Regina delle provinciali (Queens Club of the State). The reason is that Atalanta has historically been voted one of the best clubs in non-large cities.
In the 2010-11 season, Atalanta was promoted to Serie A. Atalanta made it to the 1988 Cup Winners Cup semi-finals while at Serie B. Atalanta's advance to the semifinals at the time is still the best record for a non-first division club in a UEFA-sponsored competition (along with Cardiff City).
Atalanta was founded in 1907. Since 1904 there has been a football club in Bergamo, founded by wealthy Swiss settlers, known as FC Bergamo. When Bergamo already existed, Atalanta was named after a female athlete in Greek mythology instead of using the name Bergamo. The FIGC had little reaction to the new club and did not register it until 1914. The current club is the result of the merger between Atalanta and a football club called “Bergamaska”. The two teams merged in 1924 under the name Atalanta Bergamasca di Ginnastica e Scherma. The team moved in 1928 to the current region Viale Giulio Cesare.
Atalanta participates in the Italian League in 1929. Their first Serie A debut was made in 1937, but they were immediately demoted. It returned to Serie A in 1940 and remained until 1959. After spending a year at Serie B, he was promoted and stayed in more Serie until his relegation in 1973.
Atalanta was ranked 5th, the highest in 1948. In 1981, the club fell to Serie C1, but the relegation gave it a new boost. Atalanta returned to Serie B after a season and was promoted to Serie A in 1984. Atalanta's position in Serie A was unstable, and he was demoted from Serie A in 1987, 1994, 1998, 2003, 2005, and 2010. After the club's ownership change, in 2011, it immediately returned to Serie A, which was soon in line.
It was written about the club's winning titles, and their only trophies were obtained by winning the Copa Italia in 1963. They also showed good appearance several times in European club competitions.
Welsh club Mersir Turdville defeated Atalanta 2-1 in the 1987-88 UEFA Cup Winners Cup against Atalanta 2-1 at their home stadium. Atalanta won 2:0 in the second leg match in Bergamo, advanced to the semi-finals, but lost to Belgium's Mechelen, the winner. However, in the history of the tournament, it was only twice, including then, that a team that was not in the top league in their own league went up to the semi-finals. Interestingly, the other team apart from Atalanta is Mersir Turdville's neighbor Cardiff City.
Over the years, Atalanta has made a reputation for being a team that supplies players with the league's proud youth policy. And some from Atalanta youth moved to a big club. Atalanta also started the careers of many players. However, they are from other places who have come because of their common ownership or have already been raised in other places before coming here. Christiano Doni, Andrea Concili, Massimo Donati, Fabrizio Peron, Maurizio Gantz, Sergio Florcari, Filippo Inzaghi, Paolo Montero, Sergio Porini, Alessio Takinardi, and Christian Vieri, all of whom are now suspended. Together with Hermann Dennis and Gianluigi Lentini, they went on loan to Atalanta to resume their careers, and were the ones who received attention while playing for Atalanta.
The crystallization of club youth is Zanpaolo Bellini. The defender grew up through the team's youth system and made his first first-team debut at Serie B on April 11, 1999, and has been with the club all the time and has been a staunch player.
