history
Founded and Early (1899 ~ 1950)
AC Milan was founded on December 16, 1899 by Herbert Kilpin and Alfred Edwards from Nottingham, England under the name Milan Cricket Football Club. Edwards, a former British deputy consul and well-known in the Milan social world, was elected the club's first president. Initially, it also included a cricket team, with Edward Vera as the coach of the cricket team and David Allison as the coach of the football team.
The official team colors were red and black. Under the guidance of Honeynut Kilpin, the team quickly became known. In January 1900, he won the club's first trophy, the Medaglia delle (King's Medal), and then won the national league in 1901, 1906 and 1907. The victory in 1901 was particularly significant as it prevented Genoa from losing their fourth straight victory.
In 1908, some opponents of Milan's policy of discrimination against Italian and British players became independent and founded the Internazionale Milano. In 1916, Milan won the Commonwealth Cup, which was later replaced by the Italian League, but was halted by World War I. This cup was never recognized as an Italian record.
In 1919, it changed its name to the Milan Football Club, but in 1939 it was changed to the Italian name Asochacione Calcio Milan by fascism. This name was abandoned after World War II, but since the team continued to be called Asochacione Calcio Milano, it is still under the official name.
Golden Age (1950 ~ 1960)
Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordal, Niels Reidholm
The 1950s was the golden age of Rossoneri. After the war, Milan reigned as one of Italy's top three clubs and won Scudetto in 1951, the first league title since 1907. During this period, the famous Grenori was active, including Gunnar Gren, Gunnar Nordal, and Niels Reidholm, who led the Swedish Olympic championships. It also had high-level domestic players such as Lorenzo Buffon, Cesare Maldini, and Carlo Anovac.
He won the Latin Cup in 1951 and 1956 and won the league in the 1954-55, 1956-57, and 1958-59 seasons. Gunnar Nordal was named as the top scorer in five times and also as the highest scorer in history for AC Milan. On February 5, 1950, Gunnar Nordal beat Juventus 7-1 with a hat-trick. This is the most widely known match. In the 1954-55 season, there was another historic match that defeated Genoa 8-0. In addition, although they advanced to the European Cup final in the 1957-58 season, they were defeated 3-2 by Real Madrid after a close match that lasted for extra time, and Real Madrid achieved their 5th straight victory.
Rocco Era and International Success (1960 ~ 1970)
Milan regained the league throne in the 1961-62 season. The coach at the time was Nereo Rocco, well known for his catenacio tactics. They also had young players Gianni Rivera and José Alphatini. The following year, Alphatiny's goal led Milan to defeat Benfica 2-1 to win the first European Cup. In addition, this victory was of great significance that it was the first European Cup title for an Italian club.
Nevertheless, he didn't win many victories in the 1960s. The most striking reason was the greatest strength of Inter, led by Helenio Herrera. In the 1967-68 season, he finally won another championship, with Pierno Prati, the season's top scorer, having a big ball. In the UEFA Cup Winners Cup, he also won the championship, beating Hamburg with two goals from Kurt Hamlin. The next season, Milan beat Ajax 4-1 to reach the top of their second European Cup. In 1969, he defeated Estudiantes La Plata and won his first InterContinental Cup.
Tenth Scudetto and Relegation (1970 ~ 1982)
Even in the 1970s, Milan lifted many trophies. He won three Copa Italia championships and won his second UEFA Cup Winners Cup. In the 1972 UEFA Cup, he was eliminated by Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals. But Milan's real goal was to win the 10th league title given a star. The 1972-73 season was the best chance to win the league, but the championship was missed due to a humiliating defeat by Hellas Verona. Milan didn't win until the 1977-78 season, but finally won in 1978-79. After this victory, Gianni Rivera declared retirement.
But the worst came to Milan. After the 1979-80 season ended, Milan was relegated to Serie B with Lazio by the football federation after being involved in a matchmaking scandal. In the 1980-81 season, Milan was able to win Serie B, and returned to Serie A, but faced relegation once again in the 1981-82 season.
The 2nd Golden Age (1982 ~ 1996)
Milan's entrepreneur Silvio Berlusconi took over Milan on February 20, 1986, after experiencing various financial difficulties due to poor performance. Berlusconi joined up-and-coming manager Saki Arigo and Dutch natives Marco van Baston, Frank Reicard and Ruud Wheelett, and soon returned to glory. He also signed Italian stars Roberto Donadini, Carlo Ancelotti and Giovanni Galli.
Saki beat Diego Maradona's Naples in the 1987-88 season to win. In the 1988-89 season, Milan beat Steaua Bucharest 4-0 to the top of the third European Cup. He then beat Nacional de Medellin 1-0 to win his second InterContinental Cup. The team also won the European Cup next season, defeating Benfica, and the Intercontinental Cup, defeating Olympia Asuncion. At the time of the European Cup championship, the lineups were Giovanni Galli, Mauro Tasotti, Alessandro Costacurta, Branco Varesh, Paolo Maldini, Angelo Colombo, Frank Raicart, Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto Donadini, Ruth Wheelit, and Marco van Baston.
Fabio Capello took over as Saki left Milan to take over as Italian national coach. Under Capello's direction, Milan continued to be successful and earned the nickname of Invincibility. Members of the Invisivili, who have recorded an unprecedented 58 consecutive undefeated streaks, include Franco Varesh, Alessandro Costacurta, Paolo Maldini, Marcel Desai, Roberto Donadoni, Dejan Sabisevich, Zvonimir Boban, and Daniele Masaro.
He recorded three consecutive losses from the 1991-92 season to the 1993-94 season, and also advanced to the Champions League final three times in a row. In the 1992-93 season he was defeated by Olimpik de Marseille, and in the 1993-94 season he won a 4-0 victory over Barcelona. In the 1994-95 season, he was defeated by Ajax. And in the 1995-96 season, he won his 15th league title thanks to world-class players such as Roberto Bajo, Marco Simone and George Wea.
